Karen Moning: Iced

Iced (Dani O’Malley #1)

The year is 1 AWC—After the Wall Crash. The Fae are free and hunting us. It’s a war zone out there, and no two days are alike. I’m Dani O’Malley, the chaos-filled streets of Dublin are my home, and there’s no place I’d rather be.

Dani “Mega” O’Malley plays by her own set of rules—and in a world overrun by Dark Fae, her biggest rule is: Do what it takes to survive. Possessing rare talents and the all-powerful Sword of Light, Dani is more than equipped for the task. In fact, she’s one of the rare humans who can defend themselves against the Unseelie. But now, amid the pandemonium, her greatest gifts have turned into serious liabilities.

Dani’s ex–best friend, MacKayla Lane, wants her dead, the terrifying Unseelie princes have put a price on her head, and Inspector Jayne, the head of the police force, is after her sword and will stop at nothing to get it. What’s more, people are being mysteriously frozen to death all over the city, encased on the spot in sub-zero, icy tableaux.

When Dublin’s most seductive nightclub gets blanketed in hoarfrost, Dani finds herself at the mercy of Ryodan, the club’s ruthless, immortal owner. He needs her quick wit and exceptional skill to figure out what’s freezing Fae and humans dead in their tracks—and Ryodan will do anything to ensure her compliance.

Dodging bullets, fangs, and fists, Dani must strike treacherous bargains and make desperate alliances to save her beloved Dublin—before everything and everyone in it gets iced.

Great addition to the almost insuperable Fever series.
Closed for the moment, the storyline concerning Mac and Barrons and once discovered Mac sister’s murderer and the Sinsar Dubh “imprisonment”, Moning again immerse us in the streets of Dublin by Dani’s hand .

Dublin is a war zone and the city is being ravaged by a mysterious being that freezes and kills in seconds anybody who cross his path, Fae or humans.
After freezing one of Chester’s subclubs, Ryodan decides to take the matters in hand and engage Dani detective’s services. But is this Ryodan’s real motivation? Or is he trying to attract Dani as Barrons did with Mac?

Everything points to that second option, because, let’s face it, Ryodan doesn’t need the help of a 14 years old kid, even if she is very clever. Though, credit where it’s due, Dani decode not only the mystery but also how to end with the responsible Fae frozing Dublin, when others can’t even imagine who it is, or how it could be done.
Dani’s admirers are not limited to the mysterious Ryodan and Dancer, who finally makes an appearance in the series, she must also deal with the new Unseelie Prince, Christian MacKeltar, who believes himself in love with her.
Mac and Barrons made a couple of appearances, but there is no interaction between Mac and Dani throughout the book, except at the end, where they faced each other, and leave us in suspense until the next installment in the series.
A new and sinister Fae, the Crimson Hag appears, and is intended to play the leading role, I suspect, in the third installment of the trilogy, “Flayed”. Since this charming Unseelie is dedicated precisely to this task, to skin and eviscerate his victims to make herself a dress…
As in all the previous books, the characters are constantly evolving.
This change is already apparent in Iced, since none of the characters start from the same point they were at Shadow Fever. Who will suffer the biggest change is Christian, who evolves into a Unseelie Prince.
Overall, Iced could be considered the starting point for all the characters in the trilogy, because as Karen said in a recent chat with readers, all the characters will evolve in the trilogy, being Jo, Kat and Christian the ones who will suffer a more intense transformation.

In the words of the author herself, Dani is a fighter who has never known love, while Kat’s story is the opposite.
Jo becomes the most hated sidhe-seer of the series, for now, because of his relationship with one of the main male protagonists.
And we also get to know a bit more of Lor, Ryodan’s right hand and one of the 9.
It is a pretty attractive character.

Overall, Iced is a very good novel.
As is typical with Moning, nothing is politically correct. Everything is like life: sometimes good and other bad and even sordid and cruel.
This irreverence Karen has when telling the story, has earned her no little criticism among some readers, but in my opinion, it is precisely this lack of hypocrisy what makes believable the story and makes you fully empathize with the characters.

Iced is a very good and recommended book. Hopefully it will not be long wait until the next installment!

Shadow's Claim de Kresley Cole (The Dacians #1)

Sinopsis:

Trouble on Reserve by Kim Harrison

Trouble on Reserve (The Hollows, #10.1). by Kim Harrison

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The new, free, [Sony] reader app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch has a new, never published Hollows short with Trent and Rachel working together. It’s called "Trouble on Reserve." The timing of the story sort of puts it between A Perfect Blood and Ever After, but the feeling of it is seriously slanted toward Ever After.
If you want to pick up the app, start here: https://itunes.apple.com/US/app/id566... [link is to Sony ereader app and story is pre-installed; account not required

My review:

An exciting new story by Kim Harrison!
This time, we got to see a new adventure starring Rachel and Trent.

The action takes place after the 11th book in the series, so be careful because it contains some spoilers!

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.

In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.

Published October 30th 2012 by Piatkus

I don’t know if it is because after having the privilege of reading the next book in the Rachel Morgan saga, everything else seems pointless to me, but the fourth installment of the adventures and misadventures of Charlie Davidson has been disappointing to me.

While the three previous books are full of action and intrigue, this one feels like a filler book.

The end of the third novel leaves a broken Charlie, not only physically, after suffering at the hands of Earl Walker, but also mentally, feeling betrayed by Reyes and his father.
At the beginning of Fourth Grave, Charlie is still struggling with the aftermath of such a traumatic experience, afraid of her own shadow and unable to go outside.

The fact that she is broken, reactive her enough to make the herculean effort to go out and try to charge Reyes for Walker’s capture.

On the way to the street, Charlie is surprised by Harper, a client who asks for her help, believing that someone is trying to kill her.

From that point, the plot focuses on the resolution of the case, with some occasional parenthesis in which we will see how Charlie's father tries to talk with her (with little success), how her sister Gemma tries to psychoanalyze her to help her overcome her trauma, and we also got to see a kind of reconciliation with Reyes.

The plot with Reyes is the most disappointing part. At first, they seem finally reconciled, but the peace between them will not last long ... so the relation between them is at the same point as in previous books, without moving one bit.
The Bandits also make an appearance, starring one of the funniest chapters, getting Charlie
involved in a bank robbery!

There isn’t either very much movement when it comes to discover the extent of Charlie’s powers, although she projected herself out of her body, as Reyes usually do, in a scene full of action.

Finally, and though the synopsis refers to an arsonist who is ravaging Alburquerque, the book ends with that mistery unsolved... so that plot remains open for next installment.

In short, and though Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet was supposed to be the darkest book in the series,it feels for me not as a bridge book but exactly as a filler one. Nothing deep here.
Anyway, Darynda has a few surprises (some of them you can easily foresee, to tell you the truth)

ARC Ever After by Kim Harrison

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The ever after, the demonic realm that parallels the human world, is shrinking. If it disappears completely, so does all magic. It's up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to avert catastrophe and keep life from changing... for the worse.

While saving the world is important, it isn't Rachel's only motivation. There's also the small fact that she caused the ley line to rip in the first place, setting off a chain reaction of unfortunate events. That little mistake has made her life forfeit unless she can fix it. It's also made her more than a few enemies, including the most powerful demon in the ever after—a terrifying entity who eats souls and now has an insatiable appetite for her. He's already kidnapped her friend and goddaughter to lure her out, and if Rachel doesn't give herself up soon, they'll die.

But Rachel has more than a few impressive and frighening skillls of her own, and she isn't going to hand over her soul and her life without one hell of a fight. She's also got a surpise: elven tycoon Trent Kalamack. With this unlikely ally beside her—a prospect both thrilling and unnerving—she's going to return to the ever after, kick some demon butt, rescue her loved ones... and prevent an apocalypse before it's too late. Or, at least that's the plan...

Read chapter one
Read chapter two

I get an ARC and just now I finished the book.
Its truly an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G book!!!
For me, the best in all the series. I love Pale Demon, but Ever After is  like 1 million times better. Its all action.

Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop! I was so obsessed that it was not funny XD, I couldn focus at work, and I found myself reading it while I cook, sleeping 4 hours the last 3 nights because I couldnt put it down...Is addictive!!

I don't know how I will manage a review without spoilers, but I will try ;)

Ever After is like a good coffe: dark, rich, tasty, and it will make your heart beat fast.
Rachel is all the book from bad to worse, until she is almost hopless. It has been hard to see her like that, and to discover the very sad surprise that Kim had for us :(   It changes the things completly for the next book.

In EA we discovered how the demonds  look  like, a few secrets about Al (you will feel that you wanna hug him, he does have feelings, poor little) and Trent (he is the best!), and we will see a litte more Newt. I Like her too, she helps Rachel and Al when they need it the most.

I think  is pretty clear who is going to be Rachel HEA...crystal clear... and I can't be more happy, cause I love him since book 1, and now even more! He has evolved alot as a character.

Oh and finally, someone veeeeeeeeeeeeery nasty (and Im not talking about Cute Socks) will have what he deserves...

We get to see how Rachel fix Trent fingers in a very sweet chapter... and since Kim said it before, I think is not a spoiler if I repeat it, there is a kiss in EA, but I'm not saying with "who". Well, in fact there are 2 kisses -grin-
